At all times, people desperately sought to convey what they saw to others as accurately as possible. A big step in this direction was made by mankind together with the invention of cinema. The development in this direction does not stop even now. We constantly find out information about the emergence of new technologies in the field of cinema.

3d difference from imax 3d

So, now more and more from the movie trailers you can hear the phrase "look in 3D and IMAX 3D." With the 3D format, everything seems to be clear. But many still remain at a loss: what is the difference between 3D and IMAX 3D? And why is the cost of an IMAX movie ticket much more expensive?

Technical features 3D

The now-popular 3D format was patented as a way to feed films as early as the late 19th century. The whole focus of this technology lies in the fact that completely different images are projected onto the left and right eyes of a person. But because of the too high frame rate, we do not notice. It is thanks to this trick, we perceive the image as three-dimensional. For shooting a 3D film, a 35 mm wide film is used. At the same time, it should move exclusively vertically.

3D views

At the moment, 3D is a whole class of various technologies that allow to transmit a three-dimensional image. We list only some of these technologies:

RealD - this method is as follows: at a speed of 72 frames per second, three polarized frames are projected onto each eye. At the same time, the screen is silvered here. (Example: Kinostar cinema network)

XPAN-D - alternately the right and left side of the glasses are darkened. All this happens at a rate of 48 frames per second. (Example: Cinema Park)

DOLBY-3D - here the light is divided by parts of the spectrum. Thus, each eye only catches waves with a specific range of length. This option is cheaper, but the color rendering suffers.

Features IMAX 3D

Despite the fact that our country met quite recently with IMAX 3D movies, it would be wrong to call this technology new. Back in 1971, the first IMAX cinema was opened in Canada. A little later, in 1986, the first films in IMAX 3D began to be shown in the same place. Thus, IMAX 3D is not such an innovation.

But why then for a long time this format did not receive wide distribution, including in our country? And the answer is simple. The creation and playback of materials in the format IMAX 3D requires special equipment. So, IMAX 3D differs from 3D using different types of films. And if, as we already know, a 35 mm film is needed in a normal 3D format, then IMAX requires 70 mm. Now, thanks to the special technology of Digital Media Remastering, it is possible to transfer data from one film to another.

In addition, IMAX 3D implies a special cinema room and a special screen. IMAX (ImageMaximum) can be translated as “maximum image”. Thus, it is necessary to use huge screens here. It is because the viewer does not see the boundaries of the screen and creates the very feeling of immersion in the actions on the film.

A standard IMAX screen is 22 m by 16 m. Also, unlike a regular screen, this one has a curved shape. Due to the fact that the screen is large, the hall for viewing turns into a real panorama. The image quality in such a panorama is much better, and the detailing here will be on top. And the number of rows in a similar cinema hall cannot exceed 15, otherwise the desired effect will not be achieved.

Another pleasant surprise for viewers who came to watch an IMAX 3D movie could be the excellent sound quality. Here he also acquires a volumetric form. This is due to the fact that the sound passes through a special six-channel system. That is why it is heard equally well at any point in the cinema hall.

Conclusion

And now let's summarize. Here is what we found out:

  • First, the sound in the IMAX cinema is noticeably better, it has a three-dimensional form. And at every point of the hall everything will be heard equally well.
  • The number of rows in a regular cinema is much larger.
  • IMAX 3D screen has a curved shape and a huge size, due to which the effect of immersion in motion picture.
  • The cost of tickets in IMAX 3D is much more expensive. But it is definitely worth it.

It will be interesting to friends too
